Smurfs fans attempt Guinness World Record
UK public dressed as Smurfs as part of a huge global Guinness World Records™ attempt on Saturday June 25, 2011 at The O2 (“Live Quarter” area).
Event opened from 13:30 with the record attempt count commencing at 17:00 to 17:10pm.
To celebrate the summer feature film release of The Smurfs in 3D, and the birthday of Peyo, the creator of The Smurfs, Sony Pictures turned The O2 into The O-Blue, as thousands of fans congregated to break the world record for the largest ever gathering of people dressed as Smurfs.
The final total of participants was an incredible 4891, a figure that nearly doubled the previous record of of 2510 Smurfs.
There was a free Smurf costumes and a team of “crowd Smurfers” applying blue body paint to help get the crowd into character. The event also features free family entertainment, games, activities and performances.
Simultaneous Smurf gatherings took place in 12 countries, United States, Russia, Mexico, Lebanon, Panama, Belgium, Holland, Ireland, Poland, Greece, and South Africa, all to be counted as part of the record attempt, creating a global phenomenon – the largest gathering of Smurfs the world has ever seen.
This summer, The Smurfs make their first 3D trip to the big screen in Columbia Pictures’/Sony Pictures Animation’s hybrid live-action and animated family comedy, The Smurfs!
When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the Smurfs out of their village, they’re forced through a portal, out of their world and into ours, landing in the middle of New York’s Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down…
