Waitangi Day is a public holiday held each year on 6 February to celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand's founding document, on that date in 1840.
The Treaty made New Zealand a part of the British Empire, guaranteed M?ori rights to their land and gave M?ori the rights of British subjects.
The national holiday was first declared in 1974, and since then has grown in significance for all New Zealanders through the M?ori renaissance that has fostered better understanding of the Treaty’s ramifications.
